The Nova Partnership: For Apprenticeships & Skills

Hair pair are a cut above the competition

Lisa Redman, 28, and Catherine Seeman, 27, both work at Mack Hairdressing in Chelmsford and both have been apprentices, although following different routes. Lisa started work as a Saturday girl at 14 whilst Catherine completed A levels including art. They may have started on different paths but it is clear that they both have their dream job. Catherine said: "We're both creative people and knew we didn't want to work in offices. Art was my favourite subject, hairdressing seemed like a great way to combine my interest in colour with my artistic temperament. I went on to gain a Level 3 NVQ while I worked in the salon."

Having won the UK's most prestigious award – L'Oreal Colour Trophy – in 2008 the pair have a whole new world of opportunity open to them. Lisa explained: "Winning the trophy is a dream come true and something we never expected to achieve so early on."

Catherine and Lisa will now be going to New York for a photoshoot and work for Vogue. "Anyone who thinks hairdressing is just washing hair has a lot to learn", laughs Catherine.
